After spe
nding the majority of the day at the beach (best place to be on a day off), I returned home with a few hours to kill before going to hang out with my best friend for the evening. Since I’d already spent about 4 hours reading, I figured I was due some TV time and watched the latest episode of Ugly Betty that I had DVR’d earlier in the week.
As a magazine writer and reporter by trade, I have loved this show since its inception and as the series draws to a close (the finale will be this Wednesday, April 14) the writers are tying up loose ends and setting their characters off on the next stage of their fictitious journeys.
For the title character, this journey includes the job offer to run a “young New Yorker” style magazine from London, which upon hearing had me saying, “I am officially jealous of Ugly Betty.” You see, while in college I studied abroad in London, where I had first visited at age 10 then again at 14, and after realizing I wanted to live nowhere else in the immediate future decided to continue residing after my semester ended. In total I lived in London, both as a student and PR intern, for about 7.5 months, which arguably could be the best 7.5 months of my life.
Was it easy to be so far away from my family? No. In fact, this was probably one of hardest parts of being in a foreign country. But since I was young, I have always loved the city and decided early on that I would live there some day. Well, in the winter of 2006, my time had come.
While there I made some of the best friends a girl could ask for—many of whom I still keep in contact with on a regular basis—traveled throughout Europe, met people from around the world, and furthered my knowledge and love for another culture. There are many stories to tell about London, which I assure you are worth a read, but for now, let me suffice it to say that it London is the city where half of my heart lives.
Hear, hear. Can’t say I’m a fan of Betty but I’m not much for TV at all.
I too lived in london 04-06 and in 2008 for a few months. It’s my second too -and I loved it! Some of my favourite haunts were in Camden and later, around Brick Lane. London rocks it.
Rock the Boat: Cheers to that! I lived in Northeast London for a while before moving to Hampstead. Amazing time!
Oh yeah, I was in Finchley for a year at one point. Worked at Odeon in Barnet.
Good post. Enjoyed reading it. Some excellent help and advice here on your site, it’s a superb source. Taking a note of it right away! Bye. Phil
Phil: Glad to hear you like the content. I love getting reader feedback so let me know if there’s a certain topic or book you want me to explore and I’ll see about adding it to the site. –BunnyB
